I really do not believe that one can estimate the price of a bond by the formula y=c/p*100 where the number of years the bond will run is not involved in the formula. Having a bond that runs for a long time we see the price change much more for a given change in yield than it does with a bond that will run for but a short time. This is the reason that when we expect an increase in yield we avoid buying bonds that will run many years, and why when we expect a drop in yield we want to buy a long term bond.

Hi there - I am trading with thr Pro Shares Ultra DDM tracking the DOW at 2x gearing - but would like to trade on the UK stock market since the dollar is still relatively strong. Is there a UK stock similar to this that may see 3 x growth (assuming it recovers to its former glory of 2 years ago) I believe the dollar will weaken further and therebye hedging my risk if I go down this road. I am not using margin trading so I can sit back and relax and wait for the market to recover. What Stock do you think would fit the bill...?

Hello i have received a letter today from N/Grid in regard to changing the method from Drip to Scrip, at present i receive my investment in Drip/ shares. Question? will this make a diffence to my investment if i accept and vote for scrip instead. I have tried to find an idiot explanation for this. Can you explan in laymans terms what this will mean. Letter says i have to apply for change as it will not automaticaly be changed, Or is scrip just a differnt word for the same thing? Many thanks, (don't mean to sound a complet idiot)

Hi, enjoy your site....very useful. Thanks for previous explanations. I've been checking a few companies but am still unsure how much the divided and yield numbers should influence my decisions. Barclays for instance shows a forecast of 4.40p dividend next year. The yield shows 1.7%. Could you clarify what these areas mean and perhaps how much weight they have ( or should have )in deciding what to buy please ? Hope this is not too basic a question. Cheers.

Hi, What is the difference between a SCRIP and a DRIP? Is it that a SCRIP will keep track of the remaining money left over from reinvesting i.e. - give whole shares only, no fractional and then with the money remaining behind, keep accumulating it until there is enough to buy another whole share? I don't recall in a DRIP if I have ever gotten the remainder of the money after getting shares allotted. I have been in one DRIP plan where fractional shares were allowed. Never been in a SCRIP Std Life PLC UK is considering going to a SCRIP if Shareholders approve it. Thanks.

As interest rates are very low we should expect bond prices to be high. So why is the price of the Barclays perpetual 9% bond low and interest about 12%, and you can buy it in an ISA?

renewed interest - Fri, 12 June 2009 15:30:00 GMT

We are seeing renewed interest from clients in cyclical stocks and sectors eg. mining, house-builders, banks, engineering, emerging markets and advertising, which do well as the economy recovers, but clients are also turning again to defensive stocks such as utilities, pharmaceuticals and tobacco, as a result of the widespread reports of dividend cuts and potential fall in commodity prices.
