Company Information
The Pipex company was established in 1991, originating from Unipalm (a software reseller based in Cambridge), and was the first commercial ISP in Britain.
In 1995 Pipex was taken over by UUNet for £50 million. UUNet was later bought by WorldCom, which in turn merged with MCI (Who were later bought by Verizon for $8.5 billion and are now trading as Verizon Business).
In December 1998 Dave Rickards purchased the Dial Business from MCI (including the Pipex name). The new Pipex company went on to offer domestic broadband services using BTs ADSL system, and rapidly gaining market share.
Finally, in October 2003, Pipex was brought out by GX Networks PLC for £55 million. GX Networks took on the Pipex name to preserve the brand.
Today Pipex has a strong share in the UK broadband market offering affordable high-speed internet to the home and business customer and along its way has acquired Host Europe (owners of 123-reg), Freedom2surf, Toucan and Bulldog broadband- to name but a few.
