Shareworld attend Redmayne Bentley Seminar in London

Tony Craze Kicked off the event with an introduction to Redmayne Bentley and his style of client management. Tony was keen to put across how Redmayne Bentley take a personal interest in all their clients - explaining that as an investment manager at the London office, there wasn’t a single client that he hadn’t personally met.

Tony went on to describe "Bottom Up investing" - his preferred style of stock picking whereby the company is the initial focus rather than the current financial climate or the current position in the "market cycle". Tony described how he would investigate a potential investment "starting at the car park". In other words, he would personally visit companies he liked - meet the directors; see what cars they drive and how they manage the business. Tony explained that in his opinion it is the management of a company that makes a good performer, not the company itself and thus good management is key. Tony mentioned companies such as Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Persimmon as good examples.

Next up to the stage was Russ Mould, Editor for Shares Magazine. Russ had a very different style of presentation as well as investment strategy. Russ spoke about the Top Down strategy where the investor assesses the current economic state and by that assessment then picks a good sector in which to invest.

Both Tony and Russ then took a variety of interesting questions from the audience after which we all adjourned for a bite to eat and a chance to speak in person with Russ, Tony and others present from both Shares Magazine and Redmayne Bentley.

All told the event (one of many hosted by Redmayne Bentley every October) was a great success. Both I, as a complete novice to investing and my dad, a professional investor, gained a great deal from the seminar.
