Stamp Duty Reserve Tax. A government tax on the transfer of certain assets like stocks and shares. Used to be known as Stamp Duty and was a duty based on the value of the asset being physically transferred between owners and paid by the buyer. The difference is that stamp duty was only paid if the asset physically changed ownership whereas SDRT is a tax on the transaction. This means that if a transaction is effected but closed without physical delivery the duty is still payable.
