I am currently living in the US and hold 100 shares with Santander which I would now like to sell. Please can you suggest the best way possible since I am classified as a US resident and unable to use the Abbey Sharedealing service. - Posted by Christine Woodhouse

ANSWER 12th January 2010
Hi Christine,
These CDIs (Crest Depository Instruments) are a pain at the best of times! I assume you have spoken to the Registrars and received the answer as stated in your question. I also assume you haven't got dual nationality?
You could possibly transfer these CDIs to another Authorised Depository in the States but that may create problems. Or maybe you could transfer them to a friend/relative in the UK and sell them that way.
I must admit I am struggling a bit here! If you like I will contact the Registrar tomorrow and try and find the answer. Perhaps you could contact me directly via our contact page with as many details as possible and I will investigate.
If you are an overseas holder of Santander you cannot use their share dealing service over the telephone.
You have to use the postal dealing service. Apparently you need to write to Santander and request a postal dealing request form. Complete this and send it back with the certificate (and possibly a cheque) and they will sell the share and remit the proceeds to you.If you have found this answer useful you can help us by making a donation.

I am in the same situation except I am an Australian resident and would like to find a way to sell 100 Santander shares and 100 National Grid shares.
