Well it shouldn't be much more difficult than as you describe. Most banks have a stockbroking arm and you will probably have to go through a fairly vigorous application process with them first to open a share dealing account. I can't say much more than that because I haven't done it personally, but please don't be at all nervous it should be fairly simple.
Perhaps you will share your experience on our forum to show other beginners just how easy it is!
