Hi Ben,
OK, this is not the easiest of things to do because of the time difference. This is what I do: Check the last trade price from somewhere like Yahoo Finance to get an idea  what the approximate share price is. Then I place an order in the London market with a sensible limit just off the price (also depends how much you want the stock!). If it doesn't trade then I will leave it overnight in Australia (maybe with a slightly wider limit). Again it does depend what you think of the stock and how much you want to buy it. But if you place the order overnight 'at best' then you run the risk of paying a high price.
Not sure what you consider an arm & a leg but this maybe slightly dearer than a UK stock because you will be accepting a net price plus the London broker's commission.
Hope this answers your question. If not, why not post on our forum?
