Hi Anon,
I am not sure £1000 is enough to start investing although I suspect many people do it and you have to start somewhere. The problems are cost (commission, SDRT etc.) and diversification.
That aside, your first step is to open an brokerage account. That would have to be on-line and execution only (no advice). Which brokerage is best is difficult to say and it will depend on how you trade and how the system suits you. You could have a look on our forum where some members have signed up with Halifax and seem quite happy. Otherwise I might suggest you have a look at Sharecentre (see links to Share.com on home page).
You will be welcome on the forum where I will always try and answer any of your questions re investment.
