i have a £1000 to invest in shares and im looking at paying maybe £100 a month into this as well for a long term profit.iv been advised by a friend to use hargreaves and lansdown but im unsure if u get charged a percentage everytime u buy shares.iv read on this forum about hbos....

Hi Forest,
I believe there are some accounts you can put in money gradually. Something like Sharebuilder, perhaps? There are two problems, as I see it, with investing just £1000. That is, firstly, diversification and, secondly, cost.
Maybe you should think about ETFs for diversification but not sure what you can do to alleviate the cost. As well as the brokers you mention, have you tried the Sharecentre? http://www.share.com/
